Brazil Plywood Export Markets in H1 2026: Buyer Signals

Related reading
Brazilian plywood did not move through the export market in the same way in the first half of 2026. The headline is not simply that one destination gained or another lost. The more useful signal for buyers is how purchasing behaviour changed while freight, tariffs and inventory decisions were still moving.
This buyer-focused review turns the market shift into practical sourcing decisions for distributors, furniture manufacturers and construction-product importers.
The short version
- The United States remained Brazil’s largest plywood destination, but US orders were down 23% in the first half of 2026.
- Mexico rose 58%, moving from a mid-tier destination to Brazil’s third-largest plywood market.
- Belgium fell 55%. Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom also declined.
- Jamaica and the Dominican Republic grew as buyers in several Caribbean markets kept ordering through uncertainty.
- The practical lesson: consistent buyers preserved access to supplier attention while paused buyers returned to a tighter capacity conversation.
What changed by destination
The United States: still the anchor, but less dominant
The US remained the biggest buyer of Brazilian plywood. Its lower volume does not remove the market’s importance; it changes the negotiating context. Importers that reduced orders now need to rebuild inventory plans while mills are balancing several destinations rather than waiting for one market to return.
For a US buyer, the right response is not to chase the lowest spot price. Confirm the grade, panel construction, thickness tolerance, formaldehyde requirement and packaging before asking for a production slot. A complete brief lets a Brazilian supplier compare your request with available lots quickly.
Mexico: a buyer to watch
Mexico’s 58% increase made it Brazil’s third-largest plywood destination. The move suggests that Mexican buyers are using Brazil as a serious supply option, not only as a backup. Shorter commercial cycles, product diversification and the need for dependable container planning all favour suppliers that can answer with clear specifications.
Importers entering this lane should confirm the port of discharge, preferred Incoterm, local standards, pallet configuration and whether CDX, C+/C, A/B or another appearance grade is needed. These details matter more than a generic “pine plywood” request.
Europe: weaker flows, higher need for precision
Germany, Italy, the UK and especially Belgium recorded lower purchases. A softer destination does not mean there is no opportunity. It means buyers need to explain the end use and compliance route clearly. European orders often combine FSC evidence, formaldehyde class, CE-related documentation and EUDR due-diligence data.
An importer that sends those requirements at the quotation stage is easier to serve than one that asks for documents after production. For EU supply, ask which entity will submit the due diligence statement and agree what supplier-side evidence will be delivered with the shipment.
The Caribbean: continuity has value
Jamaica and the Dominican Republic were among the markets that grew. Their performance reinforces an operational point: buyers that maintained a predictable rhythm gave suppliers a clearer production signal. In a mixed-container programme, repeatable monthly or quarterly requirements can be more valuable than an occasional oversized request.
What the numbers mean for buyers
1. Do not treat “Brazilian plywood” as one product
The market includes structural CDX, C+/C, A/B and B/B appearance grades, shuttering panels, MR and WBP bonds, and several thickness and face/back combinations. A quote is only comparable when the specification is comparable. State the grade, core, glue bond, thickness, sheet size, tolerance, certification, packaging and destination.
2. Plan capacity before the market tightens
When destinations rotate, mills reallocate production. Buyers with a six-month view can discuss recurring lots, loading windows and alternatives before a deadline becomes urgent. Ask for a realistic lead time, not a generic “available” answer.
3. Use current-lot evidence
Ask for current-lot photos, packing details and redacted technical documentation tied to the proposed specification. This gives procurement and quality teams something concrete to review without slowing the first quotation.
4. Compare landed cost, not only FOB
Freight, port charges, pallet count, container utilisation and destination handling can change the best option. A supplier that can model a 40' HC load against your sheet mix is more useful than a headline price for one thickness.
A practical sourcing checklist
Before your next Brazilian plywood request, prepare:
- Product and sub-product: plywood, then CDX, C+/C, A/B, B/B or another grade.
- End use: furniture, construction, packaging, flooring substrate or concrete formwork.
- Thicknesses and sheet dimensions, starting at 9 mm where applicable.
- Glue bond and emissions requirement: MR/WBP and E1 or another specified class.
- FSC, CARB P2, CE or EUDR evidence required by your market.
- Monthly volume, target loading date, destination port and preferred Incoterm.
- Whether products may be mixed in one container. Mixed products must be similar and manufactured by the same manufacturer; confirm the combination with us before booking.
The buyer takeaway
H1 2026 shows a market being rebalanced, not a market disappearing. The United States remains central, Mexico is gaining weight, some European lanes are softer and several Caribbean buyers are demonstrating the value of continuity. Buyers who turn those signals into a precise brief, an achievable loading plan and documented quality checks will be better positioned than buyers waiting for a single “normal” price to return.
